She spent most of her early years traveling because of her parents' job and she lived in Asia, Africa, and the US before coming back to her birthplace, Rome. After achieving a three year contract with Comme des Garçons in the late 90’s she established herself as a top model in the early/mid 2000’s becoming one of Karl Lagerfeld's favorite models who chose her for numerous campaigns and fashion shows for Maison Chanel. In that period she was the most in demand Italian supermodel known worldwide for achieving an impressive amount of fashion shows between New York, London, Milan and Paris due to her strong presence on the catwalk and to her ability of transforming herself for every designer she worked for. She fronted campaigns for Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Versace, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, Fendi, Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, Vera Wang, Proenza Schouler just to name a few, she appeared on the covers of Vogue for the Italian, French, Japanese, German editions several times and also i-D, Dazed, Love, W, Harper’s Bazaar and worked with Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino, Willy Vanderperre, Mert & Marcus, Juergen Teller and Inez & Vinoodh. Paolo Roversi lensed her as a muse for countless fashion projects. From 2005 she started a collaboration with designer and best friend Riccardo Tisci helping to launch and define Givenchy’s aesthetic until the Italian designer left the house in 2017. She appeared three times in the Pirelli Calendar (2003, 2004,2009). Today, after 20 plus years in the industry, Mariacarla still remains one of the most in demand supermodels worldwide achieving collaboration with maisons such as Valentino under the creative direction of Pierpaolo Piccioli, as well as Burberry and Bottega Veneta. Recently she has also experimented with photography, styling and creative direction shooting herself for Valentino F/W 2020/21 campaign and for the Vogue Italia July 2020 issue.
